This is a great book case we did for a client down in Dorchester Mass. With a few modifications to her design to compensate for a very unlevel floor we were able to build this unit without it making the room look smaller. The open shelving was designed specifically to hold her vast record collection. A great piece for a great room.
It is my belief, and dare I say, experience, that store-bought, mass produced, bookcases, while expanding storage and display space, never look like a custom built-in variety. Custom bookcases are crafted of wood without veneers. Custom bookcases can have fixed or adjustable shelves, or a combination of them designed to your needs; store-bought is “one size fits all” and this runs contrary to enhancing the value of your property.
I’ve built custom book cases and shelves to reflect nearly every style a client could have in mind: French, Barrister, Modular, folding, revolving, corner, ladder, learning, shelf, display, or a combination of these. If you need a custom designed library or library shelves we have experience with that as well. Custom built-in bookcases can be wall-to-wall, surround the doorway or window or in a dining or living room: you name it.
Traditional and older homes that have a lot of architectural detail are great spaces in which to place built-in bookcases as we can add molding and details to match baseboards, etc.
The easiest way to make a decision about a custom built-in bookcase is to have me visit your home or business to discuss the many options. You may already have very specific ideas in mind or we can brainstorm together.Tailgate carpentry builds to your needs and specific dimensions using any type of wood and finish you select.
While people are enamored with cell phones and large flat-panel TV screens, a finely conceived and constructed custom built-in bookcase or cabinet can fill a void in the family room, dining room, or bedroom, fulfilling many needs.
Some people just love built-in bookcases, but not everyone and especially not all spouses agree on putting white Ikea cabinets or shelves in the dining room, for example. I’ve heard stories of husbands surprising their wives, or vice versa, with Ikea items which led to serious disagreements. And who wants to return Ikea cabinets or bookshelves to the store or hide them in the basement? Reminds me of the paint store that refused to sell paint to husbands without a note from their wives, but that’s another story!
Well-built custom bookcases or cabinets can actually make a room look much roomier, especially in small spaces, adding character to otherwise plain space.
Some of my customers have come to me with pages featuring beautiful built-in bookcases and cabinets torn out of Better Home & Gardens to help me understand what they are looking for in their living space. I am always happy to discuss how we can create exactly what the client has in mind.
For some of my clients I have attached custom-made desks to bookshelves or cabinets so that a new homework area was created for a budding young student. I have also, many times, created narrow little cupboards in small, unusual, areas in a variety of rooms with excellent results.
There are many different styles of built-in bookcases and cabinets. In all cases I work hard to make sure that what we are adding is “seamless” with respect to the room’s decor. Custom bookshelves and cabinets can be made to look sophisticated or standard and can be built into walls or attached to walls and ceilings.
