This was an entertainment unit we built ten years ago. The client wants to go to a larger size in the same unit. We will have to cut away the center sections to allow for the larger TV.
In order to build a piece clients will appreciate, it takes years of experience in building hundreds of custom items – bookshelves, window seats, entertainment center and the like. Combining advanced carpentry skills, an ability to accurately follow design guidelines and being familiar with construction techniques and materials is essential to successfully carrying out a project. There are very specific techniques for building custom bookcases that one only learns through experience. In the project below, we are re-purposing a custom built piece and it takes great care to remove the area that is no longer wanted and to replace it to meet new needs.
Making sure that a custom piece fits a room’s current style is essential, for example, and a bit challenging but can be carried out with attention to detail and a knowledge of styles. For example, in Boston, there are many older homes and being familiar with styles helps one suggest a wide range of possibilities about what would work in a given situation. For example, creating an arch detail in a new bookshelf that mirrors a slightly arched doorway nearby or matching trim to nearby windows in a harmonious way.
